Five Tips for Naming Your Boat

Author: Discover Boating

TaylorTransom2One of the best things about getting a new boat is deciding what to name it but, for some, it can also be challenging. Thinking of a name that has personal meaning and reflects your boating lifestyle is not always easy. That’s why we’ve put together five tips to help you develop the perfect name for your vessel.

1. Keep it Short

This is key for several reasons. You want your boat name to be short, sweet and to-the-point. A one-word name is easier to remember and, oftentimes, less is more. More importantly, you want a short boat name because during an emergency, you will have to spell out your vessel’s name over the VHF radio. The longer your boat name is, the greater chance of it being misunderstood and having to repeat it.

2. Keep it Fun

Use your imagination and keep it fun when naming your vessel. Maybe it’s a title of a country song you love to listen to while on the water or your favorite nautical pun (e.g. Aqua-Holic). Whatever the name, just remember to have fun with it and find one that suits you.

3. Consider Loved Ones

Many boat owners name their vessels after significant others, children, loved ones and even pets. This is always a nice gesture and a popular choice among boat owners. So, if you’re stumped for a name, sometimes it can be as simple as looking to those closest to you for inspiration.

4. Mix Business with Pleasure

Some boat owner’s prefer that their boat name reflect their passion for their line of work, while others use a tongue-in-cheek approach and incorporate how boating allows them to escape stresses on land. If you have a passion for your company, naming your boat after your business could also become free advertising.

5. Be Original

This last tip really can’t be stressed enough: be original! You can start by checking out the “Name Your Boat” chapter in our Get Off Your Dock guide to get your juices flowing or by viewing this year’s Top Ten Boat Names at BoatUS for some inspiration but it really comes down to what best represents your feelings towards boating. Keep it simple and meaningful to you, the boat owner.
