It’s time to celebrate Earth Day—as well as kick off the 2015 boating season. First recognized in 1970, Earth Day is now celebrated in more that 175 countries around the world.
Of course, as a responsible boater the best way to celebrate Earth Day is to do your part to keep our waterways clean. Actually, the timing couldn’t be better…most of us are busy getting ready for our first launch of the season. So it’s a perfect time to look for ways to minimize your impact on the marine environment.
You can do your part by using environment-friendly paints and cleaners and by doing as much maintenance work as possible on land to avoid releasing chemicals and dirt into the water.
Adopt the motto “Stow it—Don’t throw it” and have trash receptacles on board to control litter and waste. If you’re a power boater, you’ll want to make sure your hull is clean and tune up your engine—both of which are great ways to reduce your fuel consumption.
